5 Oh-So-Comfy Sleeper Sofas That Do Double Duty (2024)

5 Oh-So-Comfy Sleeper Sofas That Do Double Duty (1)

Couch by day, bed by night: Sleeper sofas are the real workhorses of the living room world. But the best sleeper sofas should do more than just perform double duty. If you’re going to invest in one of these two-in-one models, you want it to deliver on its promises as both a couch and a bed.

A good sleeper sofa should have cushions that are inviting enough to sink into when you want to read or watch TV, then seamlessly open up to reveal a mattress that’s equally comfortable to sleep on. It’s also important that the product you choose is relatively easy to convert from couch to bed mode — if it’s too tricky to switch positions, you’re less likely to use the sleeper feature you’re paying extra for.

To find the best sleeper sofas that feel luxurious to sit (and sleep) on and are durable enough to hold up over many years, we tried six of the most popular models daily at home for four weeks.

During testing, we used a pre-determined methodology to evaluate each set’s comfort, ease of use, durability, quality, and overall value. We also consulted Jennifer Stephan, a New York-based interior designer, as well as Michelle Castagna, president and owner of Muse Design Studio.

Why You Should Get It

  • This is a gorgeous couch on its own, but the bed is also very comfortable.

Keep in Mind

  • The couch cushions are initially on the firmer side and do take time to soften up.

One of the most common reasons why people invest in sleeper sofas is to provide a comfortable sleep space for guests. And when it comes to sleep, the Joybird Briar Sleeper really delivers. During testing, we noted that the foldout bed was “extremely comfortable” and “amazing” to sleep on. We also had guests staying with us shortly after the couch was delivered and felt confident that our friends would sleep well on the ultra-comfy queen mattress.

As for the couch, the cushions were initially on the firmer side and needed to be broken in. However, we found that they did soften with consistent use and continued to get better each day.

Comfort aside, the Joybird Briar Sleeper Sofa collected top scores for ease of use. Converting the couch to a bed can be done in about a minute or so. We initially found it tricky to fold the bed back up, but once we got the hang of it it only took us about 30 seconds to convert it back. Assembly was speedy, too — we observed that it took the delivery team longer to get the couch out of the box than it did to build it.

This sleeper sofa also scored high marks for durability and its impressive, high-quality materials. Our dog jumped all over it with dirty paws, but the stains came out of the upholstery easily.

If there’s one thing to keep in mind, it’s the size of the sofa compared to its overall price. The Joybird website says the Briar Sleeper Sofa can accommodate three to four people, but we thought that was a bit of a stretch.

Overall, we felt it could comfortably sit two people and that the price is a bit steep in comparison. But if you don’t need a very large seating space and are looking for a sofa bed that will be truly comfortable for guests, you can’t go wrong with this one.

Why You Should Get It

  • The couch cushions are incredibly plush and it’s a breeze to convert to a bed.

Keep in Mind

  • We ran into a few issues with the white glove delivery service.

Thanks to its big, plush cushions, the West Elm Harmony Modular 2-Piece Sleeper Sectional with Storage Chaise is an incredibly comfortable couch. After using it for a few weeks, the cushions were perfectly worn in.

Ease of use is also excellent. It took us just 36 seconds to convert the couch to a bed, and less than that to fold it back up. We appreciated that it wasn’t heavy and didn’t need a ton of force to convert either.

We found the mattress to be sturdy-feeling and plusher than many other sofa beds we’ve slept on in the past. We could feel the metal bars underneath, however, so while the mattress is fairly comfortable, it’s probably not ideal to sleep on for more than a few days.

The seat cushions fill the gap between the sofa and the mattress, creating a soft headboard. We also appreciated the bed frame, which glides in and out with ease and produces few creaks and squeaks. We felt that it comes with more pillows than you might need.

The upholstery on this couch was also very durable. We chose the performance basketweave fabric and found that it was both velvety soft and highly stain-resistant—coffee and pen marks came out with no issues, and crumbs brushed off easily. We also noticed that the foam and filling on all the cushions are very pliable and would spring right back into shape.

This piece would be worthy of a spot on our best sleeper sofas list even if it had no other noteworthy features, but it also happens to boast excellent storage under the sectional, accessed simply by lifting a tap on the cushion. We felt like it was a large enough space to store extra blankets and pillows for the bed.

Our main complaint concerned West Elm’s white-glove delivery service, which is an additional cost and resulted in several frustrating issues that initially left us with a broken couch. We were able to fix the couch ourselves but were left wary of the service.

Why You Should Get It

  • This chic sleeper sofa is compact and easy to operate.

Keep in Mind

  • There are no armrests or a headboard, and it’s not a traditional mattress.

Since you’ll need a significant amount of floor space to use a sleeper sofa when it’s open, some sleeper sofas can be tricky to accommodate in small spaces. Of all the best sleeper sofas on this list, the Room&Board Bruno Convertible Sleeper Sofa stands out from the pack in that it’s very comfortable with a simple, clean design. Plus, it’s also surprisingly compact both in sofa and bed mode.

Converting the couch to a bed is seamless– all you have to do is simply pull out the sofa and pop the back of it on top to create a flat surface. Overall, we found that the conversion process was very easy and intuitive. We also liked that there’s even a small storage compartment under the seat.

It’s worth noting that there isn’t a traditional mattress on this sleeper sofa. Instead, the back and seat flatten to create a bed that cleverly maximizes space. If you’d like the bed to be more plush, you do have the option to purchase a mattress topper.

The upholstery feels well-made and durable and appears to hold up over time. We were able to easily vacuum cat hair off of it and found that it didn’t show any signs of wear and tear overall.

Our experience with the white glove delivery service was also excellent. Since the couch came in just two pieces, the assembly would have been simple even if we didn’t upgrade to that level of service, however.

Part of what makes this sleeper sofa so space-efficient is that it doesn’t have any armrests or a headboard, which means you’ll want to open it against a wall. It also has more limited upholstery color and fabric options.

Though it’s an investment, we felt that it was well-made and a durable option that should last a long time.

Our Ratings

Why You Should Get It

  • This well-made and substantial sleeper sectional has comfortable cushions.

Keep in Mind

  • Shipping may take longer than some other options.

If you’re after a high-quality sectional that can convert to a comfortable guest bed, the Apt2B Tuxedo Two-Piece Sleeper Sectional is an excellent investment. Stylish and modern-looking, this sectional is as beautiful as it is functional. And with a whopping 56 color/fabric options as well as three leg finishes to choose from, you can customize it to your space and aesthetic.

The cushions on this sectional are firm but not too hard. We enjoyed sitting on this couch and found that it was so comfortable, we often fell asleep on it. The cushions above the pull-out mattress are slightly firmer, which makes sense since they’re on top of the metal bed frame. We noticed the bumper and chaise cushions have softened up a little bit over time.

Converting the couch to a bed is a quick and easy process, and took us just two minutes. There are small tags attached to the mattress frame to instruct you, however, in case you need any assistance.

As with many sectional sleeper sofas, you do have to be careful when making the bed as you’ll want to watch how you step around the mattress, which is very close to the chaise. We found that it’s easy to stub your toe on the metal frame if you’re not paying attention. The metal frame, however, glides nicely in and out of the couch without any creaking or metal-on-metal scraping noises, which is a nice plus.

The mattress on this sectional is made of memory foam and is so soft and plush that we didn’t feel the metal frame underneath. It’s worth noting that if you’re on the taller side (5’11 and up), you may find that this couch isn’t the most comfortable option–we found ourselves sleeping diagonally to avoid our feet from hanging off the edge.

Overall, we were impressed by the overall quality of the Tuxedo sectional, and that it has held up well to rough, everyday use by two young boys and two cats. The upholstery —we chose performance woven in slate—is easy to keep clean as well. It was easy to rub our hand in a circular motion to ball up the cat hair and remove it from the couch, so we didn’t have to break out our lint roller.

Although the retailer’s white glove delivery was excellent and thorough (the couch pieces arrived well-protected and were quickly set up upon arrival), we experienced a very long and frustrating wait time for the couch itself. Shipment and the delivery date were delayed five times after we placed the initial order, so keep that in mind depending on your needs.

At nearly $6,000, this is one of the more expensive pieces on our best sleeper sofas list. But given its larger size and the fact that it’s a sleeper, we felt that it was overall a good value.

Pottery Barn Cameron Roll Arm Slipcovered Sleeper Sofa

Our Ratings

Why You Should Get It

  • It’s a slipcovered sleeper sofa with highly life-resistant fabric.

Keep in Mind

  • The rolled arms are on the thinner side.

With young children or pets in the house, you need a sleeper sofa that’s durable enough to hold up to frequent roughhousing, scratches, and a variety of messes. After testing it at home, we’re confident the Pottery Barn Cameron Roll Arm Slipcovered Sleeper Sofa with Memory Foam Mattress fits the bill.

This was the only couch in our home during testing. The couch itself is very supportive and the cushions remained comfortable after a year. Unlike the other models on our best sleeper sofas list, this one is slipcovered, and we found that the fabric still looks good after regular use.

Part of what makes this pick one of the best sleeper sofas is the cover material held up to young children, spills, accidents, and general dirt. The slipcovers can be removed, too—we found that they’re relatively easy to take off, clean, and put back on.

The bed frame is also well-made: We found it to be supportive enough for a 300-pound person with back issues to sleep on comfortably. The bed frame is also easy to take in and out of the couch.

Although overall an excellent sleeper sofa, there are a few small drawbacks to keep in mind: One is that the rolled arms could use a bit more padding. Over time, the cushioning there seems to be thinning, too.

The slipcover on the sofa also isn’t perfectly taut, which is a detail we would have changed. Finally, the back cushions, although still supportive, have become slightly thinner over time and require regular fluffing.

The Bottom Line

Overall, the best sleeper sofa is the Joybird Briar Sleeper Sofa. Not only is this stylish sofa a gorgeous piece of furniture to display in your home, but the mattress is surprisingly comfortable. The couch cushions proved to be extremely durable, too, and became even softer and cozier with time.

Our Testing Process

To find the best sleeper sofas, we reviewed six popular models at our homes for four weeks. During that time, we put the sofa beds through a series of tests, including assessing the comfort of the mattress and couch cushions, assessing the quality and texture of the upholstery, and timing how easy it is to convert the couch to a bed and vice versa.

First, we recorded how long it took their sleeper sofa to arrive after the initial order, as well as how many boxes it came in and how long it took to assemble. Next, we sat on the couch and assessed the frame and base, noting its material, whether you can feel hardwood or metal through the cushions, and whether the frame itself felt sturdy and durable or flimsy and cheap. We then looked closely at the fabric, checking the stitching and whether the cushions felt well-made.

Next, we sat on the couch for at least one hour daily for four weeks. During that time, we continuously monitored the cushions to check that they remained comfortable and well-fitting, and in particular, whether they bounced back after use or seemed to flatten over time. We noted, too, if the fabric showed signs of wear and tear.

We also converted the sofa to a bed, using a stopwatch to time how long it took to do so and whether it required multiple steps. We then slept on the sofa overnight at least once a week during the four-week testing period and recorded how comfortable the bed or mattress was.

After sleeping on it, we made note of whether the mattress was thick enough, too firm, or too soft, as well as whether you can feel any rods, bars, or springs. After using the sleeper sofa in bed mode, we timed how long it took to convert it back to a sofa, and whether the pull-out mechanism seemed durable.

What to Know About Sleeper Sofas Before Shopping

It’s essential to check the dimensions of any piece of furniture before you bring it home, but you’ll want to pay especially close attention to dimensions with sleeper sofas. For this type of product, retailers share both “open” and “closed” dimensions.

Open dimensions indicate how much space a sleeper sofa takes up when it’s in bed mode, so make sure that any product you purchase can fit comfortably in your home even when the bed is expanded.

Mattress Size

All of the sleeper sofas on this list have a queen-sized mattress, which is the most common mattress you’ll find on sofa beds. You’ll want to keep in mind that sleeper sofa mattresses tend to be thinner and slimmer than those regular mattresses (they need to fold up to fit inside the couch, after all), so your fitted sheets might require some extra tucking to fit nicely.

Retailers will often list how many people can comfortably sit on a couch. This can be helpful information while shopping, just keep in mind that the number can be tricky to standardize. Not only do people come in different sizes, but some prefer to have a little more space for a comfortable lounging experience.

Upholstering material

When deciding on upholstery material for a sleeper sofa, you’ll want to consider where it’s going to be located in your home as well as how you intend on using it. “Is it your everyday sofa or located in a secondary location with less traffic?” asks Jennifer Stephan, an interior designer. “If it’s the main sofa in your home, durability is key!”

A few of the upholstering materials you might want to consider include:

  • Microfiber: This is one of the most durable sofa fabrics you’ll find, Stephan says. It’s soft to the touch and easy to clean, making microfiber a good choice for high-traffic areas of the home.
  • Polyester: Durable and versatile, polyester is also very soft, easy to clean, and resistant to fading and wrinkling.
  • Linen or cotton: These materials are breathable, light, and soft to the touch, but they may require more maintenance to keep clean.
  • Leather: You don’t see leather sleeper sofas quite as often, and the material is not the coziest to snuggle up in. “But it’s very durable for a high-traffic area,” Stephan points out.

Other Sleeper Sofas We Tested

Article Nordby Sofa Bed

The Article Nordby Sofa Bed has some undeniable benefits, particularly in how easy it is to assemble and convert from a couch into a bed. It also feels very well-made, with solid wood legs and versatile gray upholstery that’s clearly high-quality. However, we were disappointed to find that the bed itself was terribly uncomfortable.

Your Questions, Answered

Should you sleep on a sleeper sofa often?

While there’s technically nothing stopping you from sleeping on a sofa bed every night, it probably wouldn’t be as comfortable as a regular bed for long-term use.

Why? A big challenge retailers face when designing sleeper sofas is that the mattress needs to have a very slim profile in order to fit inside a couch when folded up. For that reason, “sleeper sofa mattresses just aren’t as durable as regular mattresses,” explains Stephan. “Over time they begin to sag and lose shape, compromising back support.”

Can you put your own mattress on a sleeper sofa?

It might be possible to use an existing mattress you have on the frame of a sofa bed. But you should consider size, weight, and compatibility first, says Stephan. “For size, you want to make sure the size of the mattress matches the size of the sleeper sofa,” she says. “If the mattress is too heavy or thick it could damage the mechanics of the sleeper sofa."

Keep in mind, too, that you won’t be able to fold up a “normal” mattress into your sleeper sofa, making this a less convenient option.

How much should you expect to spend on a sleeper sofa?

The price of sleeper sofas varies widely. The models we tested had a median price of $2,699. But you can also pay more or less depending on the retailer — it depends on how much you’re willing to spend and the quality you’re looking for.

“Ultimately, if your sleeper sofa is in a high-traffic area and used frequently, expect to spend $2,000 or more for a high-quality and comfortable multi-use piece of furniture,” says Stephan.
